Created during my master's studies, Crescent began as an exploration of weight-supporting webs made from retired belay lines donated to me by Alchemy Climbing.
Having facilitated hundreds of climbs, the ropes held specific value; their wear not immediately perceptable, the very real concern for the protection of others in our community like sheath and core, the proactive action of replacement becomes rehular maintinence in desire to protect. the fibers worn by years of trust exercises between real individuals from my community—the ambition to push through our failures toward our next goal, and the personal achievement of watching ourselves grow among other individuals who want to challenge us to be the best versions of ourselves. this impercevable aura baked into these chords their expressive potential extends well past their practical use in ways I still continue to explore.
as i stretched this rope between old growth oaks the distance between the massive oaks of FSU’s Carnagie Arts Building The trees, planted before the university aquired belle vue elementary school, speak heavily to the nature of setting down roots. The trees themselves as old as many of my peers, the nature of change and the accomplishment of establishment, is also echoed in the transition of Tallahassee Rock Gym to their new location as large endeavor, and the shift to Alchemy Climbing a significant development of an existing community, as their own “New” location held a previous life as a movies 8 theater many of the children who attended belle vue elementary likely visited. One previous belle vue student, Kayla Sharece remembered her time at the school, her own family developments, and the school closing shortly thereafter; as we reminisced over the nature of the dollar theater Kayla said “before it was a dollar fifty or a dollar theater it used to be fifty cents! I remember going to the store to get candy and hiding it in our pockets before we went inside” I remembered movie hopping at my own dollar theater with my grandmother as a child, full afternoons spent catching the middle of many movies with our pockets full of candy as well.
This suspension of interconnected establishments and physical spaces relates heavily to the nature of human growth. suspended between vast stretches, our connection to other individuals creates space and support for truth to collect. This collection provides weight to our interactions and becomes a balance as the strength of worn bonds is tested and our truth becomes a balance. When our interests might outweigh our community’s the ground may come suddenly even if the approach is gentle. This crest of all we believe becoming a catalyst for our continued development the ability to find the support after might take time to develop and might mean pruning our expectations to support what’s most important.
